This Week's Playlist #77 - The Hellfest 2023 edition
5 songs from bands on Hellfest Open Air lineup this year
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 2, episode 24.
I am at Hellfest Open Air this year again. The yearly pilgrimage for the heavy metal geeks. In terms of amplitude, it is the equivalent of Glastonbury for extreme music.
I thought I'd send a similar episode to last year, with 5 non-metal songs of bands on the Hellfest lineup this year.
Enjoy, and see you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Tidal (coming soon)
Deezer (coming soon)
1. The Hu - Bii Biyelgee
The Hu are the rockstars from Mongolia. They are marrying traditional Mongolian throat singing (“khoomei”) with traditional instruments, modern elements of rock, metal and even pop (a few members are massive Coldplay fans for example).
2. Myrath - Dance
Myrath is a Tunisian metal band mixing progressive, oriental, and symphonic elements. They packed the Temple stage with a full-on show, including belly dancers, flame throwers and big smiles in the audience.
3. Powerworlf - Wereworlves of Armenia
The German power metal band, opening for Iron Maiden (cf below) on the main stage. The perfect heavy metal band for a sunny afternoon on a main stage: Anthemic songs, and heavy and catchy melodies for raising your fist in the air.
4. Porcupine Tree - Trains
Porcupine Tree to continue with.
A progressive rock ballad from their classic album '"In Absentia". Another great act in the sun on the main stage yesterday.
5. Iron Maiden - Hell on Earth
I've always been a massive Iron Maiden fan. I discovered them as a teenager, and they became my gateway band to heavy metal (and many of the bands I shared here).
Here is my favourite song from their latest Senjutsu album. Of course, they are getting older, and their best days are behind them, but I found this song with a catchy melody and profound lyrics.
They were the main headlining Saturday on the main stage. Packed crowd. The setlist was focused on their 1986 Somewhere In Time "Blade Runner" album. Bruce Dickinson, the singer, was in fantastic shape. They played this song during the encore. It was a good evening.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
