This Week's Playlist #73 - The "2023 so far" edition
I am diging into albums released in 2023 and pick up my 5 favourites.
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 2, episode 20.
No guest for today.
Instead, I decided to dig into albums released in 2023 and pick up my 5 favourites.
See you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Tidal (coming soon)
Deezer (coming soon)
VÆV - Malcontent
VÆV is a one-man band I've been following since the early days of online music (as my friend Nicolas would say).
To quote the musician directly, "It's the heaviest and most guitar-oriented stuff I've recorded in 20 years. The idea was to release something halfway between "Bleach" from Nirvana and "Crimson" from Sentenced. I've tried to keep it all spontaneous and rough, including some bum notes and missed snare hits."

Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, Shahzad Ismaily - To Remain/To Return
Arooj Aftab was one of my biggest music discoveries of 2021. A Pakistani/American songwriter, putting traditional poems in an acoustic jazz manner. Her new album takes the concept one step further, recorded live in the studio with just voice, keys, and bass with 2 jazz composers. Very intimate, elegant and subtle.
Full album: Love in Exile
Young Fathers - I Saw
Young Fathers are coming from Scotland and released their 4th album in February, somewhere at the crossroad of hip hop, industrial bass, soaring gospel choruses, thundering drums and thought-provoking lyrics.
Full album: Heavy Heavy
Ghost - Jesus He Knows Me
It is now a tradition with Ghost: an EP with covers (I love covers) between each of his albums. Phantomine just got out with 5 tracks and while some of them are more dispensable, this cover of Genesis is a real banger, with the typical Ghost atom-melting melodies.
Full album: Phantomine
Fever Ray - Even it out
Fever Ray's music is dark, electronic, and atmospheric, with their recognizable haunting and ethereal voice. Their songs are often about love, loss, and the dark side of human nature.
Their latest album is less tortured and more rooted in their "peaceful sadness" age.
Full album: Radical Romantics
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
