Hello everyone!
This Week’s Playlist - Season 2, episode 12.
Today’s playlist is brought by Steve who used to used to work in my office last year. Steve is another music geek, especially on indie and alternative music so we had long discussions about that. Stever is also a long time reader of this newsletter.
Thanks again for participating Steve.
See you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Tidal (coming soon)
Deezer (coming soon)
Guest of the week: Steve C
For those that don’t know it, the Needle Drop is an album review Youtube channel written and presented by music nerd, Anthony Fantano (occasionally assisted by his idiot-savant roommate Cal Chuchester (pictured beyond).
Its been going since about 2010 and at the end of each year Anthony compiles a list of his top 50 albums. I’m still working my way through this for 2022 [ed. note: we are still in time in the 1st quarter or 2023] but the five songs below are taken from my five favourites from that list, so far…
Even if you think these songs suck, it’s still worth checking the ND out!

Links:
Black midi – ‘Hellfire’
From the album: ‘Hellfire’
This is the short first track of an album. You really have to dive into the whole thing to get the most out of its battering conceptual madness.
Backxwash – ‘Vibanda’
From the album: ‘His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering’
Just an interesting mix of hip-hop syncopation, samples and horrorcore, also a bit of a concept going on, I think, probably..
Billy Woods – ‘Asylum’
From the album: ‘Aethiopes’
Is this a hip-hop concept album about colonialism? It definitely could maybe be.
Big Thief – ‘Simulation Swarm’
From the album: ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You’
Melody and vibe.
Black County New Road – ‘Snow Globes’
From the album: ‘Ants From Up Here’
Melody + cacophony. One of my fave albums of the year and don’t see how this band are gonna move beyond this without their singer..
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
