This Week's Playlist #60 - Guest feature: Antox
5 weekly picks from a synthwave producer (& 5 picks from myself)
Hello everyone!
This Week’s Playlist - Season 2, episode 8.
Today’s guest is another old friend from Lebanon, a long-time music junkie friend (even more than I do), and who has always been a consistent curator for some of my music tastes. You owe him a coupe of gems from last year’s playlist :-)
And in addition of Antox’s picks, 5 songs from my current rotation. I’ve been job-hunting the last couple of weeks and probably fell back in my old habits of listening to the same heavy metal rotation so this was a nice wake up call. I hope you enjoy them. Stay tuned at the end of this email
See you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Tidal (coming soon)
Deezer (coming soon)
Guest of the week: Antox
Hey! I'm Anthony aka Antox as my artist name.
1981: the year that kickstarted the 80s was the year that kickstarted me. Born in that neon-golden age of music, pixelated video games, Saturday morning cartoons, cult anime, and classic movies, I grew up on a steady diet of pop culture that would come to define a generation.
In 1993, my love for music skyrocketed and I have been consistently searching for new bands ever since.
In 2010, I started deejaying across local pubs and nightclubs in Beirut. I began incorporating more niche music into my repertoire, but the 80s had one last gift for me: 2013’s “Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon”, which introduced me to the Synthwave music genre.
In 2016, I stepped over to the creative side and began producing my own music, drawing upon my inner geek to make tracks that echo the immortal, rhythmic heartbeat of a magical decade.
Links:
1. Carpenter Brut - Imaginary feat. Greg Puciato
Carpenter Brut is the emperor of Dark Synthwave, his music evokes headbanging and moshpit energy. With the addition of Greg Puciato (of The Dillinger Escape Plan), the result is a musical masterpiece.
2. Cannons - Goodbye
Undoubtedly, my top band of 2022. Their album "Fever Dream" showcases their genre expertise, every track is a must-listen. The song "Goodbye" is a prime example of the type of music I aspire to create.
3. All India Radio - Sula Guin ft. Devin Townsend
An underrated Australian band that I stumbled upon 11 years ago through their innovative music video for "Rippled." I highly recommend you give it a watch.
In 2021, they released the phenomenal album "Afterworld" featuring collaborations with various artists. However, their partnership with Devin Townsend elevates the project to new heights. The merger of intricate music and a wizard creates a mystical journey beyond imagination.
4. Limousine - La Gaviota
A French band that was new to me until recently. I uncovered them while exploring Studio Fortiche's past projects (the renowned studio behind the remarkable ARCANE series) and discovered they created the video for Limousine's "La Gaviota." It's trippy and delicate, a pure auditory delight.
5. Collapse Under the Empire - Everything We Will Leave Beyond Us
A post-rock band that executes their craft perfectly. I stumbled upon them through Spotify's algorithm for music recommendations and was pleasantly surprised. A must-add to your playlists.
🎧 5 songs I’ve been listening to this week
Janelle Monáe - Q.U.E.E.N (ft Erykah Badu): some old track from the queen of R&B, from one of her early albums, which were so groovy and funny to listen to.
Kiko Dinucci - Veneo: A Brazilian guitar player with a fascinating approach (for someone like me not into classical guitar background), mixing Brazilian influence with punk and African polyrhythmics.
Angra - Carolina IV: I’ve been revisiting metal classics with my friend Rakkan lately, and I forgot how catchy and melodic early Angra was.
Zetra - Sacred Song: One of my new discoveries from the London goth/new wave scene.
Antox - Vic Viper Serum: I had to add one of our guest latest’s releases.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
