Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 27.
This year, again, I went to Hellfest.
The Glastonbury equivalent for Heavy/Extreme Metal music is getting bigger every year. Many will say that the festival has become mainstream, with headliners such as Metallica, Foo Fighters, and many major acts.
However, I'm more interested in the nerdy metal acts playing on the smaller stages and will try, once again, to share some of my findings of 2024, acceptable for softer non-metal heads :-)
For those interested, please find the previous episodes: 2022 - 2023.
I hope you enjoy it and see you next week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
1. Sylvaine - Nowhere, Still Somewhere
Sylvaine is a Norwegian post-metal project by Kathrine Shepard, who creates ethereal and transcendental music inspired by folklore and nature.
2. Einar Solberg - A Beautiful Life
Einar Solberg is another Norwegian singer, musician and songwriter. He is primarily known as the lead vocalist, pianist, and primary songwriter for the Norwegian progressive jazz/rock band Leprous.
This song is taken from his first solo album.
3. Klone - Bystander
I heard about Klone for a couple of years now without really taking the time to listen to them (besides Oli from W-Fenec talking about them last year)
Klone comes from a really heavy and sludgy background but has softened their tone and channelled their anger for their last few albums. This one is really aerial and atmospheric. Really enjoyed their hour-long set.
4. Bruce Dickinson - Navigate The Seas Of The Sun
The Iron Maiden singer playing solo.
It was pouring rain on a Saturday night, and many of the main stage crowds found shelter under the trees before Metallica.
I ended up getting close to the stage. It was the closest I could see one of my teenage heavy metal idols (considering he's mostly playing in massive arenas with Iron Maiden).
Here is a softer song from his 2002 album, a ballad almost.
5. Julie Christmas - The Lighthouse
One of my favourite gigs of this Hellfest and a headbanger to finish this week's playlist.
The iconic post-metal singer is back with a sophomore solo album (after a tenure in various sludge metal bands and a seminal album with Cult of Luna).
This song is my favourite one of the album, with a hypnotic opening, tortured screams and glimpses of hope :-)
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
