This Week's Playlist #129 - The Foos edition with Sabrina C.
5 Foo Fighters related songs picked by Sabrina
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 25.
I’ve asked Sabrina for another guest feature this week. I let her introduce her selection.
The Foo Fighters edition
I am going with Thomas to the Foo Fighters show in London. We booked the tickets one year ago, so the anticipation and excitement are quite high!
He also asked me to make a special playlist for the occasion, with 5 non-Foo Fighters songs, but Foo Fighters' related. So there you go!
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
1. Sunny Day Real Estate "Seven" (1994)
Nate Mendel originally played bass in the emo /post-hardcore band alongside William Goldsmith on the drums.
Just before the band broke up in 1995, Nate heard that Dave Grohl started thinking about a line-up for his new project, Foo Fighters, and started learning the songs from the demo cassette of the self-titled first album.
Grohl asked both Mendel & Goldsmith to join him during Halloween 1994. Mendel remained the longest band member of the Foo Fighters and played on all the albums since "The Colour & The Shape". Goldsmith, well, he had a hard time being the drummer of one of the best rock drummers, who can blame him 😅
And thanks to him, in a way, since we got to have Taylor Hawking replacing him 😬
2. Nine Inch Nails "You Know What You Are" (2004)
DG plays drums on several songs of "With Teeth". Trent Reznor planned to bring in members of the latest live NIN line-up to give the human touch he desired.
He found he kept asking drummer Jerome Dillon to play like Grohl, whom Reznor had met at a festival in Australia some years earlier.
Finally he decided to call Grohl himself. I chose this one because listen to the intro, and you'll understand how he's hammering his drums. 😁
3. "Cut Me Some Slack" / Sound City Soundtrack (2013)
Dave Grohl never hid his love for The Beatles.
Grohl and McCartney crossed paths for the first time in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall during the Concert For George, a tribute to the late George Harrison.
They became friends since then, and Dave Grohl's absolute dream came true when he invited him to record a song for the Sound City documentary, along with Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. What a line-up!
4. St Vincent "Broken Man" (2024)
The American singer has been a long-time friend of DG. She was even invited to perform at the Nirvana Reunion show in 2014.
So when she started recording her new album, it was easy: when you have one of the best rock drummers as BFF, you just call him!
5. The Germs “Lexicon Devil” (1978)
Aahh, Pat Smear.. I met him once and told him, "You're a legend, man," and he was modest, like, "Oh no, I'm not."
But he is.
He started playing early in the punk rock band "Germs", quickly becoming legendary in punk music.
He joined Nirvana only for 6 months until the tragic end, but I guess everyone remembers him from MTV Unplugged.
Smear joined the FF for the band's first tour, then left in 1997, and he's been back since 2006.
5+1. Josh Freese “Heavy Metal Car Collection” (2021)
Here's another great drummer. I was wondering which song to pick to talk about, Josh Freese, but he confessed he must've played on 500 songs, so the choice was difficult. I decided instead to pick one of his solo tracks.
If you follow him on Instagram, you know Josh is very funny! His album "Just a Minute" is a great example: it features only one-minute songs with various themes, like a heavy metal car collection!
When I saw him perform with the band at Taylor Hawkins' tribute, I knew he'd be a great fit for the band: incredible drummer, great sense of humor, humble...he picked all of the boxes, and I couldn't thank him enough for taking the job and allowing the Foo fans to see our favourite band live again!
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
