Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 21.
Return of the weekly guest feature, with Dan this week. I met Dan through some software engineer online community - we chatted about various boring coding issues and then drifted towards music.
I don’t know that much about funk music so I really enjoyed his picks.
Enjoy and see you next week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Guest of the week: Dan R.
Remember your first ever album?
Picture it.
Hold it.
Relive those feelings.
It brings such warmth and joy, right? For me? It was a physical CD. (Maybe that should be vintage CD now) And yes, it was a soundtrack album.
But before I reveal all, let me tell you who I am.
Developer by day, drummer by night. I’m Dan Ryland
Originally from North Wales, living in London, running a music tech startup called Insidr Music. Insidr is the direct-to-fan subscription platform for music artists.
I’m also the drummer for pop/R&B artist Kima Otung.
1. Seal - Fly Like An Eagle (1996)
So back to my first album. *Drum roll* Space Jam Soundtrack (1996)
I was 6. That film was dope. Looney Tunes meets Michael Jordan.
Sidenote: The 2021 version has nothing on the original, although I do like some of the tracks.
The specific track on this album?
“Fly Like an Eagle by Seal”
That groove is SO smooth. I will say no more.
2. The Darkness - Love on the Rocks with No Ice (2003)
Enter my rock era.
The (exceptional) Darkness.
Yes, I could have chosen “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, but I wanted to give you something different.
It was a hard decision but I’ve gone with “Love on the Rocks with No Ice”.
I love Justin’s high pitch vocals over that gritty guitar and heavy drums.
Head-banging masterpiece.
3. Wolfmother - Love Train (2006)
Continuing further into heavy music, I present: Wolfmother.
Specifically their “Love Train” track.
I think I once saw these guys labelled as ‘Metal’. I’ve always loved Wolfmother’s beefy sub-octave sounds.
Those triplet fills too. Beautiful.
4. Glenn Hughes - Dark Star (2006)
Shifting into something funkier, I would say my drumming style is very similar to Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Mix him with “The Voice of Rock”, Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple and you have some of the best albums ever.
Album: Soul Mover.
Track: Dark Star.
That funky guitar intro is everything.
Match that with Glenn’s angelic vocals and Chad’s relaxed playing style.
Perfection.
5. Kima Otung - 4K (2023)
Keeping this to just 5 tracks is SO hard.
Anyway, bringing this all into land, my final track: “4K” by Kima Otung
That synth bass line is so smooth and funky. I could have it on repeat all day.
I love the sprinkles of synth keys throughout the track. It compliments the bass line so well.
And playing this live is SO much fun. It’s one of my absolute favourites.
Well there we have it, my top 5 tracks.
If you’re interested, come and see us on the road
Thank you and good night!
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
