This Week's Playlist #109 - The Belgian edition
5 songs from great bands coming from the Flat Country
Hello everyone!
This week’s playlist S03E05 :-)
I went to my first gig in 2024 on Friday. Soulwax was playing at the Roundhouse. A fantastic set (as ever, with these guys). A blast of electronic music with rock musicians and 3 drummers.
Soulwax is one of the finest bands from Belgium, which made me realize so many quality bands are from this small country.
So, for this week, a dig into Belgium's music scene with 5 bands I listened to across the year. Their music crucible is so fertile I could have picked up another 10 songs, maybe for another time).
I hope you enjoy it and see you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform
1. Brutus - What Have We Done
A 3-piece punk/shoegaze piece, and angel vocals of Stephanie, the drummer.
2. An Pierle - Sing Song Sally
An Pierlé is a Belgian singer, songwriter, and pianist known for her work in alternative and indie music scenes.
She often performs with her band, An Pierlé & White Velvet. Her music combines elements of pop, rock, and classical genres.
3. BRNS - Here Dead He Lies
"BRNS" is supposed to be pronounced "brains".
A slow-burner indie band, playing a mish-mash of grungy guitars, heavy smashing drums and chant-like vocals, lying somewhere between post-punk and electronic soundscape.
4. Slow Crush - Glow
Slow Crush is a heavy, gloomy, shoegaze band with heavy guitars and dreamy vocals.
5. Soulwax - Is It Always Binary
The infamous Belgian dance-rock-punk behemoths are closing this week's playlist.
A song from their 2017 "From Deewee" album and a video with a close view of their "gear-heavy live installation", very similar to the one we saw earlier this week.
And as a final bonus, the cover of Belgium's greatest songwriter, Jacques Brel, "Au Suivant", Nick Cake.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
