This Week's Playlist #42 - The London edition
Week #42 - The London edition
TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
For the non-Spotify readers, there is a Youtube link for each of the songs on the cover.
Week 42!
I'm back in London.
Holidays are over. The UK is in another political turmoil (who said shitshow?), and autumn is here, with its endless grey and rainy weather. However, on the upside, the autumn gig season is ramping up. What better city in the world to be in than London for it. I've seen some amazing gigs this year (that's subject to another newsletter soon).
The perfect occasion to pay tribute to the lovely city I've been living in for 9 and a half years. Here are 5 songs from some of the local emerging scene bands I've been listening to across the last couple of years.
As we Londoners often say: "London, you're still kicking me in the face, but I still love you."
One of the perks of working across the street from Brixton academy is that I can catch up with the music all the cool kids are going to gigs these days. Beabadoobee sold out the venue earlier this week, so I had a listen as I was curious by all the emo kids with blue hair queuing :-)
Beabadoobee is a Filipino-British, moved to West London when she was 3 and is playing indie rock with a nice 90s alternative vibe :-)
They are probably the loudest and most exciting new rock band I've heard in the last couple of years from the UK. I saw these 2 girls opening for Skunk Anansie in a half-empty Royal Festival Hall. It was a gorgeous summer evening. Everyone was busy having a beer outside. They rocked the place with a massive kick in our teeth.
Not so punk and even less emerging in 2022, but probably London's finest rapper in the last couple of years.
The East London UK grime-punk duo lifts the lid on the uglier side of life in not-so-Great Britain.
Not emerging and trendy anymore, but here's a track from Maiden's second album from their East London youth and punk age.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
