This Week's Playlist #8 - R.I.P. Mark Lanegan
Week #8 - RIP Mark Lanegan
TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description of it, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
Hello everyone!
Week 8/52 :-)
Another week, another sad news.
As if the news about last week’s focus invasion by its neighbour, Mark Lanegan, one of the prominent figures of the grunge scene, left us this week (after a very long Covid).
He was the lead singer of the Screaming Trees, pioneers of Grunge music (along with bands like the Melvins, Mudhoney) who paved the way for the success of the Grunge mastodons that we know (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and co):-)
Once the Screaming Trees split up, Mark embarked on a solo career. He also started many collaborations (he was very prolific), among the most known, Queens of the Stone Age (cf newsletter 6) and Isobel Campbell.
The Guardian published a very touching column about him.
I discovered him on stage with the Queens of the Stone Age in 2003 and then tried to see him as much as possible since then.
TL:DR; Here are my 6 (I could not decide on 5) favourite tracks of Mark Lanegan or from bands he collaborated with :-)
Screaming Trees - Shadow of the Season: First things first, One of the best songs from Screaming Trees discography. It’s taken from their album Sweet Oblivion which breathes the 90s grunge vibe and energy.
Full album: Sweet Oblivion (1992)
Cult of Luna - Inside of a Dream: One of his latest guest appearances, on an EP of the Swedish heavy-post-metal band. He’s unrecognizable, with a very chilled and lo-fi voice.
Full album: The Raging River (2021)
Tinariwen - Nànnuflày: Another unexpected collaboration with the Tuareg rock stars. Very folky bluesy, as you would expect.
Full album: Elwan (2017)
Isobel Cambell - Deus Ibi Est: Another regular collaborator (they recorded a couple of albums together). This one is from Ballad of the Broken Seas. Isobel also paid a very emotional tribute.
Full album: Ballad of the Broken Seas (2006)
Full Album: Where Did the Night Fall (2011)
Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days: One of the hits of his most successful solo album to finish with. Bubblegum is the record that put him back in the spotlight.
Full album: Bubblegum (2004)
If you want to dig further, you can listen to the songs he recorded with Queens of the Stone Age. He has been appearing on every record since their sophomore “Rated R”. Hit me up for recommendations.
Until the next time, for hopefully nigher news, Godspeed!
Thomas
